Alise’s FAVs: Mission Impossible? I think not.

thCACXQRY0For those who have listened to our recent podcasts about our Arizona vacation, you may remember my drooling over a place called the Mission.  The day had started with a quest to find food for my mother.  I had carefully researched local places that would be fabulous but also address her food restrictions.  We were thwarted time and time again. My temper was on edge – hence mission impossible.

But then, Marcus pulled it off at the last minute – right when you could see my color changing to a bright magenta and steam pulsing out of my ears. He found the Mission.

Housed in an adobe white building in downtown Scottsdale, this hidden gem is indeed hidden.  The entrance is not on the main drag but it is worth the look.  We entered a dark restaurant that had a beautiful bar and a lovely dining room. Cool but warm in the Spanish style – we were seated immediately.  I was smiling like an idiot. I was cool and from the smell of it – I was in for a treat.

The menu is considered modern Latin but contains a great deal of Mexican favorites. Chef Matt Smith and Brett Raab have created a straight forward menu that still gives the unexpected. Pozole, gorditas, papas y chorizo….nods to the Mexican and Latin cuisines. But the surprises….off the cob elotes, tecate skirt steak tacos, made to order guacamole with pepitas,  garlic AND well everything one could want made table side. I wanted to eat EVERYTHING!

The wait staff was very prompt and friendly.  And yes, if I am eating traditional cuisine feel free to speak to me in the native tongue. It is so flattering and speaks to the meal to come.

Marcus drank his lunch – did I mention that the Mission has a tequila bar?  And oh the list was impressive…Marcus went for 1921 Cream de Tequila. A delightfully creamy tequila dessert drink.  Our server also offered to give him a taste of other tequilas.  It was quite evident that he was proud to work there.

I can’t say enough about my Tecate skirt steak tacos…so simple and the key?  Grilled steak that tastes like butter.  I was sad to leave without dessert and vowed that we will return for a romantic dinner soon.  I loved this place.  Please check them out…
