Need help with that prickly hangover? We have you covered.

ppearWe had a request for a hangover remedy this week.  Looks like those summer margaritas and tequila shots are getting to some of our audience. While there has been no scientifically proven remedy on the market and the ones that make those claims look kinda nasty, I picked Real Simple’s suggestions. They give you ideas to ward off a hangover  BEFORE you drink, WHILE you drink and in case of a NASTY AFTER some great simple solutions.

One of the ingredients that is getting a lot of play for warding off a hang over is Prickly Pear Extract. Partiers that took prickly pear extract before drinking saw an 18 percent drop in symptom severity according to a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine in 2004.  This is perfect since I hate popping pills, so how about a tasty drink instead?

Agua Frescas are delicious in the summer. Here is a lovely recipe Prickly Pear Agua Fresca.

ingredients

4 prickly pears — peeled with a knife and rubber gloves
1/4 cup sugar
2 limes, juice — plus slices for garnish
1/4 teaspoon ground canela (Mexican cinnamon) or regular cinnamon
2 cups ice

preparation

Puree prickly pears in a blender. Pass through a fine sieve, or mesh strainer with a rubber spatula, to strain out seeds. Puree pear liquid, sugar, lime juice, and ice in blender 1 minute. Pour into glasses; garnish with limes.
